Verizon Communications Inc., or Verizon for short, is a US-based telecommunications company headquartered in New York City. The German branch (Verizon Deutschland GmbH) is based in Dortmund. The group is closely related to US surveillance.

With sales of $ 126.0 billion and a profit of $ 13.1 billion, Forbes Global 2000 is ranked 18th in the world's largest corporation (as of 2016). The company had a market capitalization of $ 198.4 billion at the beginning of 2017.

Established on June 30, 2000, Verizon is incorporated in Delaware and is the result of the merger of Bell Atlantic Corporation and GTE Corporation (formerly General Telephone & Electronics Corporation). Verizon began trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the VZ symbol on July 3, 2000.

During the merger of GTE and Bell Atlantic, the corporations had to outsource the large Internet telecommunications network of GTE Genuity Inc. as an independent company on the instructions of the competition guard in Washington. Genuity represented a former division of BBN Technologies, which built the very first components of the network, which would later become the ARPAnet and thus the basis of the Internet, in 2003 it was taken over by Level 3 Communications.

Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon and Vodafone, is now the largest mobile operator in the United States. Headquarters is the former AT & T headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Verizon Communications holds the majority stake in Verizon Wireless.

Verizon acquired the MCI Worldcom group in 2005 for $ 6.75 billion (€ 5.2 billion).

Under the name Verizon Business, Verizon offers only business and government services in Europe.

In mid-2015, Verizon AOL, took over the core business of Yahoo two years later, In June 2017, the merger of Yahoo! and AOL to the new umbrella brand Oath.
