Star Wars

Star Wars
Star Wars is a super-duper legendary futuristic fantastic (epic epic space opera) film/media franchise, whose story began in 1977. Creator of Star Wars is the screenwriter, producer and director George Lucas. At its core, Star Wars consists of three film trilogies: the original trilogy which, in addition to Star Wars(1977, later subtitled Episode IV: A New Hope in 1981), includes the films The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983); the prequel trilogy, which plays in the period before the original trilogy, with the films The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002), and Revenge of the Sith (2005); and finally the sequel trilogy following the original trilogy, which began in 2015 with the movie The Force Awakens and continued in 2017 with The Last Jedi.

Star Wars is classified among others in the genre Space Opera and as a hero epic. The films play in the fictive universe of a distant past and deal with the ongoing struggle between good and evil — two sides represented by the light and by the dark side of power. Essentially, the first two trilogies tell of the downfall of the Galactic Republic, the rise of the Galactic Empire and the successful revolution against the Empire by the former leaders of the Republic. Star Wars models and sources of inspiration were pop culture pieces, including those of director Akira Kurosawa, and the myth theory of Joseph Campbell.

Judging by their box office record, which together so far amount to more than 6 billion US dollars, the Star Wars films are among the most successful works in film history. The most important awards of the films include ten Oscars. Star Wars also gained notoriety through sophisticated and innovative trick technology. The Star Wars franchise, which is one of the most commercially profitable, includes off-screen movies and television series, more than 250 novels, as well as comics, toys and countless other merchandising products, beyond the core films. Up to and including 2015, the sale of Star Wars branded products generated proceeds of approximately $ 30 billion.

In 2012 Lucas sold his company Lucasfilm, along with the rights to Star Wars, to the Walt Disney Company. The awakening of power was the first Star Wars movie under the aegis of Disney, followed in December 2017 by Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In November 2017, Disney boss Bob Iger announced that after the Sequel trilogy another trilogy with completely new story and new original characters will appear in another galaxy. Creative boss was Rian Johnson, who already worked on The Last Jedi.
